Photo of the week: Surgery workshop

The Monash University Surgical Interest Group (MUSIG) held a clinical workshop at The Alfred last week, with over 100 people in attendance. The event provided attendees with the opportunity to learn practical skills from some great surgeons. The workshop featured stations which taught gloving and gowning, suturing, hand-tying, chest drains and cricothyroidotomy.

Central Clinical School invites you to attend the 2014 Annual Postgraduate Research Symposium.

Students have the opportunity to explain their research to other students and by participating, will foster collaborations, networking and a greater awareness of the expertise and research being conducted at AMREP. Current PhD students will be running the program, including chairing the presentations: Ms Jodie Abramovitch (chair), Ms Kai Sin Lee, Ms Sara Mohktar, Mr Timothy Colgan and Mr Man Kit Lee, assisted by Ms Dussy Kuttner.   Participants will be judged by a panel of senior academics and postdocs. Congratulations to NHMRC project and ECR grants for Central Clinical School researchers

Congratulations to the CCS researchers who were successful in the 2014 NHMRC funding round. Five Early Career fellowships (including one Career Development Fellowship) and five project grants were awarded with an income total of approximately $5.1M. See detail below. The national success rate declined to 14.9% as fewer projects were awarded more money. Source: NHMRC 2014 Outcomes of funding rounds.

Monash Institute of Medical Engineering: #MIME

Monash University has recently launched a new initiative, Monash Institute of Medical Engineering. The Director is Professor Jeffrey V. Rosenfeld. Multidisciplinary teams of researchers, together with top clinicians in Monash's partner hospitals, are creating innovative medical technologies for the heart, lung, brain and vision. The broad research themes include:
  1. Neuroscience and Vision
  2. Cardiovascular and Pulmonary
  3. Therapeutics and Regenerative Medicine.

Translational Research awards PhD and Graduate Certificate approved

Monash University is offering a new PhD and Graduate Certificate in Translational Research from 2015, the first of their kind in Australia. Monash University’s three clinical schools (Central, Eastern, School of Clinical Sciences at Monash Health) have teamed up with associated health services and research institutes to offer the new programs in conjunction with ARCS Australia Ltd*.
These courses offer scientists and clinicians an opportunity to develop skills in the conversion of basic research findings to clinical practice, commercial applications and therapeutic products, in multidisciplinary environments.  The courses are meeting an emerging market need for such skills.
